The Eighteenth Amendment

SECTION 1
After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or
transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into,
or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject
to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.
SECTION 2
The Congress and the several States shall have concurrent power to enforce
this article by appropriate legislation.
SECTION 3
This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an
amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of the several States,
as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the
submission hereof to the States by the Congress.
The Eighteenth Amendment or the Prohibition Amendment made the manufacturing and distribution of alcohol
illegal in the US. This Amendment was highly opposed and was repealed only 13 years after its ratification due
to the failure of the Prohibition.

This cartoon demonstrates Uncle Sam (representing the USA) banning liquor from the United States. In this highly
unpopular amendment, the US banned alcohol only to be met with restraint and disobedience from Americans.

This article explores the historical context of the eighteenth amendment from the temperance movement to the actual
prohibition. It also mentions its negative effects such as the rise of the mafia and its eventual repeal with the ratification
of the twenty first amendment.
